The Artguy has scene this festival for 3 years, and cannot recommend it to fellow artists as a venue to sell your thing. It just doesn't have the muscle or the bucks... but do drop in and check out the scene, it gets a "Worth It" certificate. It's odd ...

Hampsters...

show full show summary

I think "Hampsters" are considered Hampden Hipsters, cool people that now live in Hampden area but are not true Hampden originals.

"Hampdenites" are lifelong residents or longterm business owners in the Hampden area.

Show #14 - Hampden, the Other Baltimore

the Other Baltimore

Where did the term Hon come from????

"My Uncle Paul, who is Bawlmer as anything, calls guys "babe" and women "hon." I believe
this to be historically correct usage. I know Highlandtown was where the real hons were,
with the housedresses and the marble steps and everything. Remember in Hairspray, the
Turnblads live in Highlandtown
, there's a reason for that. I'm not sure what the actual
origin was.

The Honfest and the Cafe Hon and all being in Hampden is OK, but they turn it into
generic 50's nostalgia kitsch, not Baltimore. Might as well have a "Happy Days" theme
festival.

The BW Parkway (I295 Northbound) sign was in reaction to the 80's yuppification and blandization of
Baltimore traditions. There's a sign that says "Welcome to Baltimore," and a guy kept
putting a sheet that said "Hon!" on it. The highway guys kept taking them down, so he
made them more permanent. It was quite a battle, and everyone in the city was rooting for
"Hon Man." I think the mayor finally made some sort of deal with him so he'd stop..." P.R.
