Artscape 2006

Artscape 2006 - Artscape 2006, Baltimore, Maryland on the Campus of MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art. Artscape in Baltimore has had 24 great years and 1 lousy, it all adds up to starting with new organizers!

This year the Artguy, aka, Rick Santiago decided not to apply to Artscape 2006. It was show of defiance against what may become the start of the end of Artscape as we know and love it. More on this later...

Enjoy the photos, got questions? Send to artbabyart@usa.com

Update 09/06/2006 - It was a slow month for the Studio but we made it down for Artscape 2006, whereupon speaking to friends and artists, Artscape 2006 may have been one of the worst in recent memory. Maybe it was Kim Domanski, the Mayor, ZAPPLICATION.ORG, NAIA, WESTAF or any combination thereof, the only thing they can't deny is how bad Artscape 2006 really was! It will probably be worst next year with the same crew of people trying to organize something that is way beyond their capacity and more importantly, their understanding. The Artists' Market was OK, some exhibitor seemed to have ripped off the Artguy but what the heck, it's ok, they probably still DIDN'T sell anything AGAIN and won 'Best of Show'. The Fine Arts displays were in one word, 'the most awful year of repeatedly mediocre works that did not make sense', but if it did, we would have known there was a change at the top! And then there was the Art Cars scam by Artscape organizers, this one made to the CityPaper and Doug Retzler the Art Cars Organizer, with friends of the Artguy even mentioning it. Besides all this, they'll try to blame it all on the weather, but it's rained on many Artscape's in Baltimore, we will see...

The Artguy does not recommend applying to next years Artscape or any Artscape until there is change, for now there are many alternatives popping up everywhere. And maybe the Artguy can no longer say for sure to vote for that great Mayor O'Malley, it was his office that created all of this! Who'd thought, that this years Artscape may have started a whole new Anti-Artscape sentiment by so many artists in the city I love, Baltimore.

More to come... Later! YOU ARE BEING HERDED INTO GROUPS AND YOU DON"T EVEN KNOW IT, WAKE UP! IT IS THE PROCESS!

UPDATE 10.23.06 - the Artguy got published in the Citypaper here in Baltimore through a letter to the editor regarding what may be the worst Artscape in recent memory... Artscape Sux scroll to bottm of page, grammar is a little off, but then the Artguy wrote this on a late Friday evening after a night out of hard play...
